2. Course Description: This course will provide the student with an overview of the various applications of Microsoft Office, an integrated software package. Students will be introduced to word-processing, spreadsheet applications and database applications through the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access. This course combines theory and practical through both applications and problem solving

Course Organization

This course is an online class with most of the time spent using the computer. The instructor will post assignments on her web page for the students to work and print. Students will be required to read the lessons and complete the assignments and turn them in on time. Also, the students will be required to attend class the first week, to take a mid-term and final test.

 

Course Objectives

 

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

 

a) Use Microsoft Office toolbars, menus, help and tip wizard

 

b) Open create, print and close a document using Microsoft Word

 

c) Use spell check, auto correct, tab, insert and preview.

 

d) Save changes, open as read only, use undo and redo, show codes, and use advanced printing functions.

 

e) Align text, change font style, size and face. Use the bold, underline, italics, strike through and small caps. Remove formatting and use symbols, bullets and numbering.

 

f) Change the line spacing, use indents use auto format, and change margins.

 

g) Use cut and paste, move text and use cut and copy.

 

h) Use the thesaurus, grammar check and spell check

 

i) Use headers and footers, page numbers, footnotes, endnotes and widow and orphan lines.

 

j) Start Excel and use the menus and toolbars.

 

k) Open a worksheet, enter labels, make simple corrections, save and close a workbook.

 

l) Use formulas, file functions, format data, use ranges, copy data, format data, print a worksheet and copy a formula.

 

m) Use functions, function wizards, auto calculate, change column widths, create a series, use auto complete, comma format, print options and print preview.

 

n) Edit, use cell notes, page breaks, spell check and page setup.

 

o) Start access and use the menus and toolbars.

 

p) Plan a database, create a table, open a database, enter records and enhance datasheet and forms.

 

q) Edit and print a database

 

r) Use sorting and searching functions

 

s) Create, use and save queries.

 

Course Requirements

 

6. Attendance: Students are expected to attend class on scheduled days. There will be one day for orientation and two days for testing.

 

8. Exams: The exams will consist of online theory tests. The exam may consist of true/false and multiple choice. The tests will be given on the computer in which you will receive your grade as soon as finished. Mid-term grades and final grades are mailed out by the registrar’s office.

 

9. Make-up Exams and Late Assignments: Students will be allowed to make up one exam during the semester. Make up exams are given at the convenience of the instructor and may not be the same format as the original exam. Any student who misses an exam should contact the instructor immediately following their return to school. Students will not be allowed to make up an exam if the instructor is not contacted immediately after missing the exam. Students will not be allowed to retake an exam for any reason. Any assignment turned in late will be assessed a 10% penalty if turned in by the following class. If the assignment is not turned in by the following class time the student will be given a 0 for that assignment. The assignment is termed late if the assignment is not handed in when the instructor calls for them (not 5 or 10 minutes later). In class assignments that are done and turned in during class can not be made up.

10. Student evaluation: Each exam will be worth 100 points. Online assignments will be posted on Blackboard and expected to be turned in on time. A final exam will be given worth 100 points.

11. Grading Scale:

 

a. 100% - 90% = A Midterm test = 30%

 

b. 89% - 80 = B Homework = 40%

 

c. 79% - 70% = C Final Exam = 30%

 

d. 69% - 60% = D Total = 100%

 

e. Below 60% = F
