BLACK RIVER TECHNICAL COLLEGE
GER 1013 AND GER 1023
FALL SEMESTER 2002-SPRING SEMESTER 2003
DR. JAN ZIEGLER, INSTRUCTOR
I.
GENERAL
INFORMATION:
A.
Schedule: German 1013 (Elementary German I) will meet
from
2-3:15
Tuesdays and Thursdays during the Fall 2002 semester. German 1023 (Elementary German II) will meet at the same time in
the Spring 2003 semester. The class
meets in TM 103.
B. Course Description: This
course is an introductory study of German and assumes no prior study of
German. Successful completion of
Elementary German I is a pre-requisite for Elementary German II; successful
completion of both Elementary German I and II are pre-requisites for
Intermediate German I (GER 2013). One
year of high school German is assumed to be the equivalent of one semester of
college-level foreign language study.
Two semesters of a single foreign language at the college level (i.e.,
Elementary German I and II) will satisfy the requirement for the Arkansas Challenge Scholarship, which calls for two
years of a single foreign language in high school.
C. Text:
Moeller, Adolph, and
Lalande Hoecherl-Alden, Deutsch Heute, seventh edition. Also required: Workbook and CD set; not
required for purchase--Video Series: Fokus
Deutsch

E. Performance Objectives and Assessment: Upon
the successful completion of Elementary German I and II, students will have a
foundation in the four basic skills in language learning: listening comprehension, speaking, reading,
and writing. The focus of the course is
on the students’ communicative skills, with emphasis on practical and
functional use of the language. The
students will be able to perform basic conversational exchanges in which they
give and receive personal information, ask and respond to questions which
involve an ability to comprehend and communicate at a minimally functional
level. Students will possess German
skills sufficient for the next level of language study.
In
addition to the central language focus, students will gain understanding of a
cultural and historical framework to give deeper awareness of Germany and
German-speaking Europe, and, by extension, of other cultures. They will also grow in their understanding
of their own cultural and historical
heritage.
Each
unit of study consists of specific communication objectives, as well as
cultural understanding (Land und Leute).
Assessment of the students’ achievements will be heavily based (50
percent) on their abilities to fullfill basic communication objectives, and on
the acquisition of cultural/historic understanding (25 percent) of “Land und
Leute” at one of the following levels:
Sehr gut (Very Good)
Gut (Good)
Befriedegend (Satisfactory)
Ausreichend (Adequate)
In addition, the students’ grades will be impacted by completion of homework assignments, to include lab work, web-based assignments, and workbook assignments (25 percent).
Note: Class attendance is closely connected to
success in this class. Failure to
attend class will result in the loss of homework grades; this alone would
negatively impact the students’ grade.
Even more important is the loss of instruction time in this class. Like math, language study is cumulative;
each new skill is built upon those learned earlier. Thus this class will conform to the BRTC policy (see Student
Handbook section of BRTC Catalog) which says students may be absent no
more than four times for a class which meets twice weekly. Exceeding the limit may result in the
student forfeiting, at a minimum, 10 percent, or one letter grade.
This syllabus is designed to function as a guide, and is subject to modification as deemed appropriate by the instructor.
