Essay Topics for Mid-Term

Essays: Please note.  An essay is not one or two sentences or a list.  It is a well-organized answer that completely covers the topic.  This is not an English class, so I am not checking for grammar errors or essay construction problems; however, I do expect to see the topic covered.  Many lose points because they use two or three sentences to answer a question.  That is an introduction…not an answer.  With this in mind, please prepare to completely answer three of the topics below on the date assigned for midterms.

1. Determine how and why people moved west.
2. Explain how the Populist movement developed and list their demands.
3. Explain the rise of Big Business and the tactics they used.
4. Explain the rise of labor unions and the tactics they used.
5. Explain how business influenced politics during the Gilded Age.
6. Explain the rise of the Jim Crow South.
7. Describe how the U.S. expressed its ideas on expansionism.  Don’t forget to include Cuba, the Phillipines, the Pacific, the Panama Canal, etc.
