Text:
Berk, L. E. (2004). Development Through the Lifespan, 3rd Ed. Boston: Allyn & Bacon.
Course Objectives:
Survey of human development ranging from conception through late adulthood, with an emphasis on the physical, emotional, cognitive, moral and social growth of human beings. Educational and familial contexts are highlighted.
Course Requirements:
In order to accomplish the above objectives, you will be expected to complete readings and exams. Specific requirements are:
*Participation, preparation, and professionalism in class discussions and all activities (150 points).
*Five 50-question multiple choice exams (100 points each). Expect questions that require analysis, application, synthesis, or evaluation responses rather than simple recall. See below for dates.
*One Blackboard essay test. (100 points)
*AFTER READING CHAPTER 5 IN THE TEXT: Call a Child Care Center in your area and explain that you are required to do an evaluation for a school assignment. Explain who you are and why you are having to do the assignment and request the opportunity to visit with them to complete the Child Care Center Evaluation Form located in the Study Guide Section of Blackboard. (50 points)
Tests and Test Site Information:
There will be 50 multiple-choice items on each of the five required tests. The tests will be given ON CAMPUS. Test items will be taken primarily from the reading assignments, but you can expect some test questions based on lectures, films, or any class activity. The tests are worth 100 points each.
In Pocahontas, the test will be given on the BRTC campus in the Library. Please check library hours before arriving and bring a photo ID and a pencil. Any notes, study guides, or tests, will be taken from you when you present your ID and ask for a test.
In Paragould, the tests will be proctored by Joan Linnstaedter by appointment (call 870-239-0969 ext. 110) on the days posted in the syllabus.
If you cannot take an on-campus test due to your own scheduling problems, please drop the course.
Blackboard:
To enroll in blackboard: If you do not know how to enroll in blackboard, please go to the following website: http://de.blackrivertech.org/students/Validate/de_Validate_Enrollment.htm
This is the location where you may find your grades, the syllabus, and the take home questions.
Attendance Requirements:
Attendance will be taken from your participation on blackboard. There will be fifteen discussion questions. Each question is worth 10 points, but the points are not free.
Participation: Your participation will be determined by the quality, not the quantity, of your weekly participation in discussions and messages. By the way, statements like I agree, Thats so true., and how interesting. are not quality participation. I would like your honest feedback. It is okay to agree or disagree, but also tell why you agree or disagree .I read them all, and I will not give participation points for junk answers. In addition, read below:
Discussion Board: You will have discussion questions during the semester. You must post three substantial messages to each question and provide detail. Grammar and mechanics will also be included in the evaluation of these assignments. Better grades will go to those who read his/her classmates answers and responds to them. I will be looking for the following answers that:
a. bring up relevant questions and new ideas
b. clearly answer the question
c. clarify a point
d. use a personal story/situation that illustrates a point
You must post all communication on the discussion board. There is a section for communication with me. If the nature of your communication is private, and therefore personal, you may email me at the above address. Do not abuse this privilege. If it seems I am trying to force you to communicate, congratulations, you have indeed understood. Since we do not meet in a class on a regular basis, the only way I have of knowing what you know is through the discussion board. This is the nature of my online classes and experience has taught me that individuals who do not communicate are often confused about assignments, misunderstand the requirements of the course, and do not take responsibility for their own learning.
Academic Dishonesty
Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited. In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions that may be imposed through institutional procedures as a result of academic misconduct, instructors have the authority to assign an "F" for the exercises or examination or to assign an "F" for the course.
Grading Scale:
|
A = 90 100% |
D = 60 69% |
|
B = 80 89 % |
F = 59% and below |
|
C = 70 79% |
|
Note 1: You are expected to establish personal access to the Internet and to communicate with me via email if necessary.
Note 2: If you have a documented disabling condition, you are expected to meet with me as soon as possible to arrange appropriate modifications. If you have a disabling condition that has not been documented by the Office of Disability Services, you must complete the appropriate documentation before requesting modifications.
Note 3: This syllabus is intended as a guide for the course and is subject to changes as situations warrant at the discretion of the instructor.
Make-up Policy: ONLY ONE MAKE-UP EXAM WILL BE ALLOWED. Please contact me personally at 870-248-4000 ext 4143 as you will have to set up an appointment with me on the Pocahontas campus to make up a test. A MISSED TEST MUST BE MADE UP WITHIN ONE WEEK OF THE TEST DATE. ANY TESTS MISSED AFTERWARDS WILL RESULT IN A ZERO.
