Course Description:

Designed to give students practical experience and proficiency in database management through lecture and lab exercises.

Performance Objectives: Upon completion of the course the students should possess a broad understanding of Microsoft Access for Windows. The students should be able to apply what they have learned in a realistic business situation. Students will be able to demonstrate through the completion of assignments the following: how to create a database, add, delete, cut, paste, and print reports; sort and filter tables; add tables, forms and reports to a database; use queries; and other additional features.

Course Requirements and Evaluation Methodology:

Attendance: Students are expected to attend class regularly and to be punctual in order to complete satisfactorily this course. If a student is absent, the student is responsible for the missed work. Excessive absenteeism may result in loss of credit for the course. Excessive is defined as two times the number of times the class meets per week.

Assignments and Assessment:

Class Participation and Behavior: Class participation is a vital part of the learning environment. Therefore, each student is expected to participate in classroom discussions, answer questions, and offer input. Students are expected to behave in a professional, courteous and respectful manner while in class. In accordance with college rules, food and beverages are not permitted in the classroom.

Cell phones and pagers will be turned off during class time.

Computer Time: All assignments may not be completed during the scheduled class time; therefore, students should schedule approximately ten to twelve hours per week of computer time outside of class. The out-of-class time that the student requires will be determined by the student’s own abilities and understanding of Access.

Exams and Make-ups: The exams may consist of true/false, multiple choice, short answer, or essay questions. The instructor reserves the right to deviate from the described test format. Test results and scores will only be distributed in class after the tests have been graded; usually, this is the next scheduled class period. Mid-term and final grades are posted on Campus Connect; if you call the instructor for your grades, your final grade will be reduced by a letter grade.

Students will not be allowed to retake an exam for any reason.

Only one missed exam will be permitted per semester per subject. Emergencies and sudden illnesses will be taken into consideration with proper documentation.

Late assignments: Any assignment turned in late will be assessed a 20% penalty if turned in by the following class. If the assignment is not turned by the following class time, the student will be given a 0 for that assignment. The assignment is termed "late" if the assignment is not handed in when the instructor calls for them.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT:

Assessment Points: 100 points each exam

50 points collected and graded assignments

Grading Scale: 90-100 A
